The free 2nd annual Nantucket Music Festival took place on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Children's Beach, with Candy O'Terry emcee; island bands The Jason Sullivan Project, Perfect Day, Meghan Trainor, Dave St. Band, and others; several bands from the Community Auditions, and headliner Ayla Brown, former American Idol contestant (top 16), and daughter of Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts. Both the Senator and his wife Gail Huff, former reporter for WCVB, were present.
Ayla was the Pied Piper of Nantucket that night, with a dozen or so young girls swaying and dancing in adoration at her feet, then following her off and on and off the stage. I had a brief conversation with the Senator who said he wished he could spend more time here, and never realized how much reading he was going to have to do as a U.S. Senator. We both agreed that those children on stage with Ayla would never forget that night, and would be able to say they were there when Ayla Brown launched her very successful singing career.
The no-alcohol NMF was created to increase the self-esteem of island students by encouraging their musical creativity, while also raising funds to facilitate musical programs and programs to address bullying and depression in island students. It was put together by island resident John V. Madison of Madison Broadcasting and Charles Armstrong of Community Auditions, Jim McGregor of Raw Sugar Music Inc., and Nancy Bean of Wise Up Events.
